I support whole heartily the bid to host the 2021 Canada Summer Games. If successful, these games will leave a huge legacy in terms of new facilities, and support system that will help our young athletes in years to come to strive to be the best they can be. Let’s make a difference! Let’s do all we can to win this bid.
As a long time member of the Niagara Region rowing community, I have had the luxury of utilizing our world class athletic facilities; Brock University, Welland International Flat Water Centre and St. Catharines Rowing Community. These organizations and their venues were paramount in helping me reach my Olympic dreams. Now the time has come to share these facilities and culture with the next generation of athletes and bring the 2021 Canada Summer Games to Niagara!
I am a rower and a Mother. As an athlete I strive for excellence. As a Mother, I nurture it. The Canada Summer Games in Niagara Region would perpetuate excellence for this and future generations. That is why I am in.
As a former Olympian and presently the Assistant Athletic Director at Brock University bringing the games to Niagara is liking sharing an Olympic experience with all of you. The sport and cultural experience that a multi games brings to an area is educational, electric and economically huge. The legacy it leads behind in infrastructure, role models and opportunities will make Niagara better.
Carrying the provincial flag during the opening ceremonies of the Canada Summer Games in Kamloops in 1993 was not only a honour to lead my team onto the field hockey pitch, but also a moment where all the hard work, years of focusing on one goal and pride to be with so many talented and intelligent athletes positively impacted me. Playing in the Canada Summer Games, was a highlight of my youth, and truly shaped me into the person I am now, showing me what direction to take in my schooling, in life, leading me to helping others and have a focus on personal health and wellness. The other 14 girls on my team, still after so many years, are connected. We have changed from the athletes to the supporters, leading, coaching, training and assisting the aspiring athletes within our respective communities.
From an athletes perspective, the games are a very important part of every ones dream to make the Olympic games. I had the chance to go to the 1987 Canada Winter games in Cape Breton and it was the first time that I had experienced a big multi sport event and a major starting point in being able to get that big games feel that every athlete has to endure to go onto bigger games like the Commonwealth, Pan Ams and of course the Olympic Games.
I want the Canada Games to come to Niagara because it benefits both the Niagara residents and the visitors and athletes coming in for the games; It's a chance for the rest of the country to see what an amazing venue we have here, and conversely, Niagara residents would have access to the many improvements and developments that would have been put in place for the games. Furthermore, once everyone sees what a great location this is we will attract more events in the future. Everyone wins.
